About Me

I've been collecting Coke cans since 1986. While not the biggest collection, I enjoy collecting unique Coke cans and bottles from around the world. I also have an unrestored Vendo 81 in my basement. It's been untouched in 13 years. One of these days I'll restore it to it's full glory. Please take a look at the photo gallery, and if you have a picture to share, go ahead and add it!

Diet Coke Changed its Taste

Written by Derek on April 11, 2010, 706 views

I remember when Diet Coke changed their taste.  I almost called this post “Diet Coke changed their Sweetener” but what’s important is that Coke messed with the taste of their product again.   It was the mid-90′s and my wife was a die-hard Diet Coke fan.  One day, without warning, Diet Coke changed their can design.  My wife cracked open a can, expecting a hit of syrupy goodness.  Instead she curled up her nose.  “This tastes different!”  she told me.  What?  Surely Coke would not have changed their recipe, a scant 10 years after the New Coke fiasco.  But they did. Even I could taste the difference.

We sat down that night and wrote a letter to the Coca-Cola company. (No email in those days).  We complained about the taste, and told them how disappointed we were in their decision.  Much to our surprise, about a week later we got a package in the mail.  It was a 6-pack of Diet Coke, and coupons for a few more 2-litre bottles.  In the enclosed reply letter, Coke asked us to give it a chance.

Well, we remained disappointed.  I bought up 10 cases of the old Diet Coke before it disappeared from the shelves.  Time passed and eventually we began drinking the new Diet Coke.

Do you remember this formula change?
